What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and a mandatory charitable contribution for all eligible Muslims. It is an act of worship that purifies wealth and brings blessings to both the giver and the recipient. The word "Zakat" means "purification" and "growth" in Arabic.

By giving Zakat, Muslims fulfill their religious obligation while helping those in need. It is calculated as 2.5% of a Muslim's total savings and wealth that has been in their possession for one lunar year, provided it meets the minimum threshold (nisab).

Who should pay Zakat?

Zakat is obligatory for every adult Muslim who possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the nisab threshold (approximately the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver) for one lunar year.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I pay my Zakat?

Zakat is due once a year after your wealth has reached the nisab threshold and has been in your possession for one lunar year (hawl). Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for added spiritual rewards, but you can pay at any time.

What is the current nisab threshold?

The nisab is equivalent to the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Since these values fluctuate, we recommend checking the current values when calculating your Zakat.

Is Zakat due on all types of wealth?

Zakat is generally due on gold, silver, cash, savings, investments, business inventory, and rental properties. Personal items like your primary residence, vehicles for personal use, and personal belongings are exempt.

Can I pay my Zakat in installments?

While it's preferable to pay your Zakat as a lump sum when it becomes due, if you face financial constraints, you may pay in installments with the intention to fulfill your obligation as soon as possible.

Is Zakat tax-deductible in Australia?

Yes, Zakat donations to Human Initiative Australia are tax-deductible as we are a registered charity with DGR status. You will receive a tax receipt for your donation.
